What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry focusing on preventing and correcting irregularities of the teeth known as malocclusion – the misalignment of the teeth due to improper positioning of the teeth or jaws.

Dental malocclusion occurs in situations when the teeth are crooked, twisted around, too crowded or too spaced apart. Skeletal malocclusion occurs when the jaws are misaligned, or when the jaws are either too big or too small for the teeth. Some patients may have one or several of these conditions.

Dr. Daher will be able to diagnose your particular bite based on a thorough examination and x-rays of your teeth and jaws. Based on this examination and a personal consultation our specialist will recommend a treatment plan that best fits your condition and your personal circumstances.

How is an Orthodontist different from a Dentist?

An Orthodontist is a dental specialist, trained to diagnose and treat a poor bite and improperly positioned teeth, with the goal of improving the functioning of the teeth and their overall cosmetic appearance.

In addition to achieving the same university degree as a general dentist, an additional three years of University are required to earn the specialty designation of an “Orthodontist.” Although general dentists can attend continuing education courses to perform certain basic orthodontic procedures, more complex treatment needs require the advice and expertise of an Orthodontist.

While we often think of only young people receiving orthodontic treatment due to the importance of early intervention, many adults also seek orthodontic care.

Our specialist will be pleased to address your concerns, and answer all your questions at the initial consultation visit.

Your family dentist will often diagnose an orthodontic problem and then refer you to an Orthodontist; however, a referral is not necessary for an orthodontic consultation.

What are the benefits to orthodontic treatment?

To begin with, orthodontics will give you a more beautiful smile. In addition to the improved esthetics, most patients feel more confident and a higher self esteem.

Equally important is the fact that orthodontic treatment makes it easier to improve and maintain proper oral health, and improves jaw and teeth function. Without orthodontic treatment, malocclusion may cause tooth decay, gum disease, bone deterioration, tooth loss, difficulty chewing, or speech impairment.

Are adults able to get orthodontic treatment?

It is never too late to undergo orthodontic treatment. With proper treatment and monitoring adult teeth can be realigned to fix physical problems or to improve esthetics.

There are a range of modern treatment options available, including Invisalign® and clear or porcelain braces, that make treatment as comfortable and least noticeable as possible. Following a consultation our specialist will be able to recommend a suitable treatment plan and options based on your individual needs.

When should a child visit an orthodontist for evaluation?

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children visit an orthodontist for evaluation no later than age 7. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected early; while the jaw is still growing. Treatment in the earlier years typically means that a patient will avoid surgery or other more extensive corrections later when they are teenagers or adults.

Our specialist will be able to determine the best treatment plan, or monitoring schedule, for your child after an initial consultation.

What is "esthetic orthodontics"?

The majority of adults considering orthodontic therapy realize that a "Great Smile" will improve their facial symmetry and overall appearance. They desire the benefit of straight teeth but sometimes are hesitant to commit to braces. For the esthetically conscious patient, we offer several excellent alternatives to traditional braces, namely Invisalign® and Clarity® braces.

Invisalign is a series of clear, removable, plastic aligners that are custom-made for your teeth.

Dr. Daher and Fresh Smile Orthodontics are one of North America’s leading innovators in Invisalign® treatment, “the clear alternative to braces.”

Fixed braces are the traditional way of correcting malocclusion. We offer the esthetic option of clear, porcelain braces, which are less visible and an excellent alternative to metal.

What is Invisalign®

Invisalign® is a method of orthodontic therapy promoted as an "invisible" way of straightening teeth without using traditional braces. It instead uses a series of clear custom-fabricated aligners designed to gradually and sequentially move teeth to their desired positions.

Invisalign® is suitable for both adults and teens, to address issues such as: crowding, widely spaced teeth, overbite, underbite and crossbite. Treatment time is comparable, or often shorter than treatment with traditional braces.

The Invisalign® method of aligning teeth and improving smiles is a modern orthodontic technology that is extremely popular throughout Canada, the United States, and around the world. Because Invisalign® is clear, most patients undergo treatment without anyone noticing!

During your initial visit Our specialist can determine if you are an appropriate candidate for treatment with Invisalign®. Dr. Daher is a distinguished Invisalign® Elite Premier Provider in North America, a member of "a select group of doctors who have achieved an exceptional level of Invisalign® experience."
